Peter Nyathi is an entrepreneur that has taken his success to new heights simply by believing in his hopes and dreams. Nyathi started out as a farmer on another man's mushroom farm but soon made the decision to take the leap and start his very own mushroom farm.
The decision changed Peter's life completely as he now makes mushroom deliveries to over 350 Shoprite Checkers branches around South Africa.
It wasn't as easy as it sounds however because even though Peter has a BSc Honours in Agricultural Economics and years of experience in the industry, he struggled to secure funding for his dream of owning his own farm - but closing the Shoprite deal opened all the right doors.
“We started supplying to Shoprite and Checkers in 2016, and this opened the market for us. In every business you need access to a market, and I am very grateful to Shoprite for putting their faith in us,” says Peter.
Today Peter's farm employs 175 people who help him drive his dream of helping South Africa to improve their lifestyle choices.
“In South Africa we are still trailing far behind in terms of consumption relative to countries like Australia and the United States. It would be good to get people encouraged to eat healthy food, including mushrooms, and to reduce meat consumption and cholesterol,” he says.
