A cost-of-living video posted by financial page FinWise on 27 August 2026 has set off a heated conversation about what R25,000 a month is really worth in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.
The post followed similar breakdowns the page had done for Johannesburg and Cape Town. This time, FinWise turned to Durban locals to settle the debate, asking whether R25,000 is a decent salary in the city.
What the numbers actually look like
According to the breakdown shared in the video, a R25,000 gross salary leaves you with roughly R21,500 after PAYE and UIF deductions. From there, R7,000 goes towards rent, bringing take-home spending money down to around R14,500. Groceries, medical aid and basic essentials eat through another R5,000, and a modest car repayment of around R3,000 a month cuts that figure further. What remains leaves little room for savings, emergencies or anything enjoyable, and that is before any debt, subscriptions or unexpected costs are factored in.

FinWise acknowledged that Durban is generally more affordable than Cape Town or Johannesburg, particularly when it comes to housing. But the video pointed out that a car payment, debt or children can make R25,000 feel very tight, very fast.
