A South African mother in Lake Tahoe has shared her family’s US school story. Magriet said her twins finally started classes after a nine-month gap.

Her children finished school in South Africa before the family relocated to the United States. They arrived in Florida too late to join the school year there. America then entered its own summer break just weeks after they arrived. The twins moved from one long summer holiday straight into another one.

Magriet quickly enrolled the children online once they settled into their new home. The school only asked for proof of residency and their vaccination records. There was no need for certified copies or long government department queues.

New subjects and extra support

A school counsellor then helped the twins choose subjects that interested them. They picked leadership, event planning, Spanish and guitar through a local college. Magriet said the school has just over a thousand diverse students enrolled. About half the students are white, while nearly half are Hispanic overall.

The family also received help because they arrived in America as refugees. The twins automatically qualified for SUN Bucks without any extra paperwork needed. Each child received 120 dollars in aid to help buy summer groceries. They also received free bus passes and new laptops ahead of the new term.

The school also uses a four-block schedule instead of many periods. Students take fewer subjects each day but spend more time on them. Some students also take AP classes for early college-level credit now. These credits can help students finish high school with a head start.

In Lake Tahoe, snow can delay or close schools during harsh winter mornings. Magriet said the family is still adjusting to that unfamiliar idea completely.
