Limpopo Father Gets Life Sentence for Killing Daughter, South Africans Say Punishment Is Not Enough

LIMPOPO — A 39-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment after killing his small daughter in a brutal attack triggered by a protection order application.

Tshilidzi Vincent Mudau was sentenced in the Waterval Regional Court after he was convicted on charges of murder and arson following an incident on 4 December 2023 at Ha-Maila Kanana in Tshitale. The court imposed a concurrent 10-year sentence for arson, making the effective sentence life imprisonment.

What happened in Tshitale?

State Prosecutor Lebogang Maluleke told the court that the child's mother had applied for a protection order against Mudau. Upon learning of the application, Mudau telephoned her and threatened to burn down her house and kill their daughter if she refused him access to the child. The police stated the child was 18 months old, while the National Prosecuting Authority listed the child as being four.

Later that day, the mother was informed her house had been set alight and rushed to the scene with family members. While she spoke to police at the scene, Mudau arrived, forcibly took the child from her arms and fled.

"A short distance away, he held the child by her legs and smashed her head against the ground twice. The child sustained multiple skull fractures and succumbed to her injuries," Maluleke said.

Mudau was arrested shortly after the incident. He pleaded not guilty to both charges. The State further informed the court that Mudau carried eight previous convictions for violent crimes, strengthening the argument against leniency.
