African Renaissance Podcast host Mbuyiseni Ndlozi has hit out at South Africa's courts and National Prosecuting Authority after Eskom contractor Michael Lomas walked out of the Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg on Thursday, 6 August 2026, with a wholly suspended sentence despite pleading guilty to one of the country's most staggering corruption cases.
Lomas, as part of a plea and sentence agreement accepted by the court, was sentenced to 15 years' imprisonment, suspended in full for five years. He admitted to pocketing R745 million and channelling bribes while working as an Eskom contractor. His co-accused Hudson Kgomoeswana also pleaded guilty under a separate agreement and received an effective five-year prison sentence.
Ndlozi did not hold back his frustration on X, writing:
"What kind of sentencing is this? Almost a billion lost in corruption & he gets to go home? If our courts & NPA are so lenient on corruption, how the hell do they imagine the war against it will be won? At this stage of our democracy & development, corruption of this magnitude is the biggest cause of state and developmental failure! Terrible sentencing! Mcm!"

Why Michael Lomas got a suspended sentence
The court heard several mitigating factors in Lomas' case. He had already served 10 months in custody following his extradition from the United Kingdom to South Africa, where he was held until bail was granted. His deteriorating health was a central consideration, with the State confirming he resides in a 24-hour care facility and that correctional services lacks the capacity to meet his medical needs.
Lomas is expected to serve as a State witness in the ongoing trial of his former co-accused, including individuals identified as Hlakudi and Masango. Separately, the NPA's Asset Forfeiture Unit is in ongoing negotiations with Lomas over asset confiscation, with the AFU having already rejected a R6-million offer.
