Grammy-winning DJ Black Coffee's company is now pursuing Maserati South Africa through the courts' enforcement process, after a writ of execution granted authorities the power to attach and sell the carmaker's movable assets. The move marks a significant escalation in what began as a luxury vehicle dispute.
A writ dated 17 August instructs a sheriff to identify and seize movable property belonging to Casa Vehicle Holdings, which trades as Maserati SA, and sell it at public auction if necessary. The total amount to be recovered stands at R7.735 million, comprising a R7 million judgment debt and R735,000 in interest accrued at 10.5% per year from 22 August 2025.
Why DJ Black Coffee took Maserati to court
Black Coffee, whose legal name is Nkosinathi Innocent Maphumulo, purchased two luxury vehicles from Maserati in November 2024 through his company, Soulistic Music, at a combined cost of roughly R16 million. While the carmaker delivered the first vehicle, the second allegedly never arrived within the agreed timeframe.

That second vehicle was also meant to receive extensive customisation, including modifications to the seat belts, brake callipers, and interior and exterior trim. Maphumulo says Maserati committed to a June 2025 delivery date but failed to honour it.
Correspondence from a Maserati employee at one point suggested the company had secured a production slot for the vehicle, citing Maphumulo's international profile as the reason the factory made a special exception. Despite this assurance, the vehicle reportedly never came.
Maphumulo argued in court papers that the R7 million he sought back represented a trade-in value Maserati owed him following the alleged breach of their agreement. He also tried to resolve the matter directly with the carmaker before turning to litigation. Maserati denied the breach and rejected his claims entirely.
What the writ actually means
The Johannesburg High Court granted summary judgment in favour of Soulistic Music on 3 August, ruling that Maserati had not presented a substantive defence. The writ issued later that month gives the sheriff authority to begin the execution process, but it does not confirm that any specific assets have already been seized or auctioned.
No particular vehicle, equipment, or asset belonging to Maserati SA has been identified or taken at this stage. The writ simply opens the door for enforcement action if the debt remains unpaid. Any actual attachment would only become clear once the sheriff proceeds and formally records the steps taken.
Separately, Maphumulo is involved in unrelated legal proceedings concerning social media commentator Nota Baloyi, which include allegations made against him and contempt proceedings.

Nomsa Mazwai takes DJ Black Coffee to court
Meanwhile, Briefly News reported that Nomsa Mazwai took Black Coffee to court over royalties for a song, and the matter is set to be heard in September 2026.
The singer alleges she wrote and sang the song’s lyrics after Black Coffee approached her to collaborate in 2011.
