Nomsa Mazwai is taking her long-running royalty dispute with DJ Black Coffee to court, alleging that she was not fairly compensated for her contribution to the song Traveller. The singer shared a lengthy statement on X on Monday, 10 August 2026, alongside a notice confirming that the matter will be heard at the Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg on 1 September.
Mazwai recalls how ‘Traveller’ came about
According to Mazwai’s X post, Black Coffee approached her in 2011 after watching her perform at Madiba’s in Brooklyn and asked her to record a song with him.

She said she did not ask for payment at the time because she wanted royalties instead. Mazwai claimed she organised the studio herself and wrote and sang all the lyrics for Traveller.

Mazwai alleges that the song generated more than R2 million, but says she received less than R30 000. She claimed that SAMPRA paid her share as a performer, while Black Motion and Black Coffee were also paid. However, she alleged that she received nothing from Black Coffee for her performance.
Mazwai said she repeatedly asked questions about the money over the years but was met with silence. She now believes that silence was deliberate.
Mazwai said she wants honest pay
Mazwai said she eventually discovered what she described as a loophole 13 years later and approached Black Coffee to resolve the matter, believing there had been a mistake.
She claimed the issue remained unresolved two years later and said she was informed through his lawyers that her money was with SAMPRA, an account she disputes.
The singer also shared the court notice showing that the matter is set down for 1 September 2026 at 10am.
Mazwai said she had stayed quiet because she did not want to
“bring a Blackman down”
But now wants what she believes she is owed.
