On 15 September 2025, Mthethwa took to her X page after news broke that yet another woman's body had been discovered in Ekurhuleni. Police confirmed that the latest victim was reportedly found partially decomposed in a river and partially unclothed.

Rather than frame the killings as the work of a single predator, the actress posed a far more unsettling possibility.

"What's even more scary is that if this isn't the work of a serial killer, it means different men are independently making the same decision to take women's lives. Sit with that. It's not one monster we need to fear; it's multiple men deciding that women's lives are disposable."

Her words reframed the crisis not as an isolated criminal matter but as a deeply rooted, systemic issue of gender-based violence, one that speaks to broader attitudes towards women's safety in the country.

The deaths that sparked national concern

The wave of discoveries has been linked in public consciousness to the disappearance of 38-year-old runner Elizabeth "Tsontso" Moselakgomo, who went missing on 9 September after heading out for an afternoon run. Her body was found on 12 September at Rhodesfield in Kempton Park, bearing severe injuries. In the days that followed, several more women's bodies were uncovered in similar circumstances across the area.

Since July, seven women's bodies have been found dead under comparable conditions, triggering nationwide concern and calls for urgent action from both citizens and public figures alike.

Mthethwa's message gave language to the fear many South African women have been sitting with, shifting the conversation from finding one culprit to confronting the wider reality of gender-based violence as a collective societal crisis.
