Bongani Mthombeni is having quite the season. The businesswoman was officially named Chief Executive Officer of Atana on Tuesday, 6 October 2026, stepping into the top seat just weeks after she and former Bafana Bafana captain Matthew Booth announced they are expecting their first child.
Mthombeni, who previously served as both a board member and executive leader at Atana, takes over from Interim CEO Vidar Johannessen, who steered the company from February. According to the announcement shared on X, she brings 18 years of experience spanning engineering, infrastructure and professional services, built across senior leadership positions at multiple organisations.

The announcement drew widespread praise online, with many pointing to her academic credentials as further proof of her suitability for the role. @Onalenna0713 noted:
"She has an impressive career in Engineering, holding a Master's in Chemical Engineering. Congratulations Bongani."
Matthew Booth and Bongani Mthombeni's relationship
The appointment took on added meaning given the very public road the couple has travelled. Their relationship first became known in 2022 after Matthew's then-wife, Sonia Booth, alleged on social media that he had been unfaithful. Sonia described hiring a private investigator and using her car's tracking device to uncover the affair, and tagged both Matthew and Bongani in several posts. Matthew disputed the allegations.

The Johannesburg High Court finalised Matthew and Sonia's divorce on 28 June 2024, after Matthew initiated proceedings in November 2022. Bongani had also filed for divorce from her former husband, Klaus Möller, in February 2023, with that divorce finalised in November 2023.
Since then, Matthew and Bongani have built a life together, and just a month before the CEO news, the couple shared a photo of three trainers — two adult pairs and one tiny baby pair — to announce they are expecting their first child.
Mzansi had plenty to say about the double milestone. Below are some of the reactions:
@sanizwe said:
"Booth had vision and was playing 4D chess."
@Whipped_Crim_54 applauded:
"CEO appointment...baby on the way...she stays winning! Love it for her!"
@ZoeDaLastLetter joked:
"Booth was just tired of being a provider. Now he can focus on being a princess."
@chosenwani remarked:
"So long as this is a sincere and genuine appointment that recognises her contribution, skills and talent, not another facade for sgaxa that is underworks and the public don't know anything as yet, so ke face."
@madamspeaklk shared:
"Love this because it tells you exactly what you need to know about the universe 😭😂"
@Zoxo71071795 asked:
"Didn't she recently get promoted somewhere else?"
