A funny Cameroonian sports commentator left social media users amused with a hilarious video about South Africa’s sporting prowess.
The clip, shared by TikTok user @realgranddilan, garnered 475K views, 43K likes, and 4K comments from users who commented with a mix of laughter and affection.
The video starts with the man jokingly saying that some people from South Africa need to understand that he is not their public announcer. He humorously adds that they are in every competition in the world, from rugby to cricket and F1. While attempting to remove his shirt, he humorously says he feels like they want him to take it off completely.
Celebrating Springboks' win against All Blacks
He shares that his followers were texting him about the 43-10 win against New Zealand, and reminding him that the Boks were going through to the semi-finals of the World Rugby Championship. He added that after over 30 messages, he was wishing for Mzansi to start losing.
In his humorous way, he congratulates the Springbok players for reaching the semi-final. He jokes that every sports post he makes seems to be about South Africa.
Getting to know the Cameroonian commentator
Briefly News spoke with the comedian, who is also called Velaphi by locals, to get to know him better.
We asked the man where he originally was from and what it was like growing up. He said:
"I'm from Cameroon, so many people think I’m Nigerian because of how I talk and mention Nigeria, but I'm not. It was actually difficult to grow up there, and it is much more difficult now for younger generations because of the ongoing political crisis that is happening in the country."
The team noted how the man posts sports commentary. We asked what the story was behind it. He responded:
"I actually love South Africa, and I love the country so much. I throw them because they always throw me back. I'm very happy with how South Africa always responds. They have a positive mindset, and they are always hopeful and grateful for what their team is able to achieve, winning or failing. They are still proud of their teams, and that’s why I love South Africa."
We asked which sport has his heart, and why that one specifically. He added:
"Football has my heart because it is a sport of passion, and I grew up actually loving and watching it. I don't really know anything about basketball, and I only started learning about rugby because of South Africa."
The man was asked what was the wildest reaction you have gotten from one of your video commentaries, and he noted:
"The wildest reaction was from the people from Kenya when they threatened to take down my page because of how I talked about them. Up to now, I have actually stopped talking about Kenya, and I have apologised for that."
When asked what the one surprising thing people don't know about him, the man said:
"People don't actually know that I am from Cameroon. It's a shock to many. From the way I talk, some people do think that I’m Nigerian, but I am not. And again, many people don't know that I'm single.".
The team asked the man if he had any message for his local fans or sports lovers who enjoy his content. He shared:
"South African Republicans, I love you people so, so much. I love a few people, and I love you people. Thank you guys very much for always being there for me. You know. You guys are my biggest supporters financially and in every league. So I love you so much. You shouldn't think that because we are having jokes online, we are enemies now. I love them so much. Thank you very much."
