South African President Cyril Ramaphosa became the unlikely star of a viral moment on 4 August 2026, after a quick on-the-spot interaction with a journalist went in a completely unexpected direction.
Award-winning EWN reporter Mongezi Koko captured the clip and shared it on his Instagram account with the caption: “Guess who said hi to my followers.”
In the video, Koko asked President Ramaphosa to send a quick greeting to his social media followers. Ramaphosa, seemingly mishearing the request, turned to Koko and asked: “To your girlfriend?” The moment sent those nearby into laughter, and it did the same to thousands of South Africans watching online.
Ramaphosa did eventually say hello to Koko’s followers, but by then the damage was done. The mix-up had already stolen the show.
