A South African content creator’s brutally honest take on medical aid left Mzansi in stitches, and nodding along.
Marcius_Van posted a Facebook video on 5 August 2026 with a simple caption: “Medical aid in South Africa is Zambuk and faith.” What followed was a two-minute rant that struck a nerve with thousands of South Africans who know the feeling all too well.
He pointed out that most members receive the same dreaded SMS sometime around the 9th of the month stating that their medical aid savings have been depleted. According to Marcius_Van, the real comedy is that this happens before Valentine’s Day, after just one dentist appointment, one GP visit, and a script for antibiotics.
“But according to your medical aid, that’s luxury living, my brother,” he said.

SA’s real medical aid plan
Once the savings run dry, Marcius_Van explained, South African families do not panic. They simply switch to what he called the traditional health care plan, the unwritten rule that nobody is allowed to get sick. A broken arm from a bike accident? “Walk it off. Rub some Zambuk on it.” A proper flu with shivering and chills? “Drink some Med lemon. Go lie in the sun. Get some vitamin D.”
He described how, from March to December, the family doctor becomes a combination of Google, Vicks VapoRub, and Gogo’s opinion, and insisted that Gogo’s diagnosis is often better than a GP’s anyway.
