A Kempton Park teenager is already living out his dream at 16, one altitude at a time. Keanu Theo Maartens, a Grade 11 learner at Hoërskool Kempton Park, completed his first solo flight at Rand Airport, earning his first pilot stripe in the process.
Maartens has been training at the Central Flying Academy at Rand Airport since May 2025. The solo flight marked a defining moment in his aviation journey, one he described with honesty: the second he realised no one else was in the cockpit, a flash of panic set in. But it faded quickly, replaced by something far more powerful — confidence and a feeling of pure freedom.
Balancing books and the skies
Life as a student pilot is no small commitment. Maartens juggles his regular school curriculum with weekend flying sessions and dedicates an hour each day to studying for his aviation exams. His target is to earn his Private Pilot Licence (PPL), a key milestone on the path to a professional flying career.

His parents have been a steady source of encouragement throughout the journey, and Maartens credits their support as a driving force behind his determination to keep going.
Eyes set on an international career
The dream does not stop at a PPL. After completing school, Maartens plans to work as a flight instructor to accumulate the flight hours required for a commercial licence. His ultimate goal is a cockpit seat with an international airline, with Qatar Airways among the carriers he has his eye on.
