Why listening to your partner matters

According to relationships expert Dr Nicholas Jenner, one of the biggest things that keeps a relationship healthy is learning how to really listen. A lot of people listen only so they can reply, not so they can understand. They wait for their turn to speak instead of actually hearing what their partner is trying to say. Good communication is what keeps a relationship feeling alive, so it’s something worth working on.

Dr Jenner teaches couples to listen in a way that first focuses on understanding the other person. This means being ready for the conversation, giving full attention, not judging, paying attention to feelings, allowing pauses, and asking questions when something is unclear. The point is to reach a place where both people feel understood and can find a solution together, instead of trying to win or prove a point. In Instagram user @kay_mahapa's clip, it might seem as though the gentlemen went overboard, but they show signs of listening to their partners.
