Why weddings are important in SA

According to FamilyLaws South Africa, over the past decade and a half, South Africa has seen a steep drop in the number of people tying the knot. Back in 2008, the country recorded around 186,000 civil marriages. By 2023, that number had fallen to about 99,000, almost half, even though the population had grown. Today, only about 1.7 marriages take place for every thousand people, putting South Africa among the countries with the lowest marriage rates in the world.

A big part of this shift comes down to money. With high unemployment and rising living costs, many young couples simply can’t afford to get married. For some, cultural traditions like lobola add extra pressure, turning marriage into something that feels financially out of reach. People are also getting married later in life: most grooms are now in their late 30s, and brides are usually in their early to mid-30s.

All of this makes the story of the Joburg couple even more meaningful. Their moment stands out as a reminder of love and commitment at a time when fewer South Africans are choosing, or able to formalise their relationships.
