Dada Morero Says City of Johannesburg Cannot Investigate Kenny Kunene

JOHANNESBURG — Dada Morero, the City of Johannesburg's mayor, responded to Kenny Kunene's resignation as the MMC of Transport and Patriotic Alliance councillor on 25 July 2025.

Morero spoke on eNCA on 26 July, a day after Kunene resigned following an investigation the PA launched into his alleged connections to murder suspect Katiso Molefe. Morero welcomed his decision and said that the circumstances surrounding his resignation were communicated to the mayor's office.

Morero said that the office is expected to meet with the PA after accepting the letter of resignation. Morero said that it is not the City of Johannesburg's function to investigate Kunene's alleged ties to Molefe. He said that this matter requires the police.

Morero said that matters similar to what Kunene was accused of were referred to the Ethics committee. However, since Kunene resigned, the matter need no longer be referred to the Ethics Committee. He said that since he resigned, the Council's code of Conduct no longer applies to him.

McKenzie suspended Kunene on 23 July 2025, a day after Kunene was found outside Molefe's house. Molefe was arrested in connection with the murder of DJ Sumbody.

Kunene defended himself and said that he was at the house to accompany a journalist who was doing an exclusive interview with Molefe for his publication. He denied having any personal relationship or connection with Molefe, who was out on bail after the murder of a man mistaken for a whistle-blower in Vereeniging, Gauteng.

What did South Africans say?

South Africans reacted to Morero's revelation that the Council would not investigate him.

Sophitsho KaNcinitwa UDyani said:

"As if anything fruitful investigated by them was going to come out."

Hennie Combrink said:

"The obligation is towards the taxpayers. The matter should be investigated."

Christos Sello Skbhalo said:

"This is how the game is played."

Richie Collen said:

"Surely he was told to resign or else follow the investigation. It's gonna uncover hidden and dangerous sensitive information that includes those you never thought were involved."

Dr Mbuyiseni Ndlozi reacts to the Kenny Kunene saga

In a related article, Briefly News reported that former Economic Freedom Fighters member Dr Mbuyiseni Ndlozi reacted to Kunene defending himself for being at Molefe's house.

PowerFM shared a clip of Ndlozi on his radio show. Ndlozi was listening to Kunenedenying having any connection with Molefe and laughed while listening to the clip.
