Nkosi’s sister, Nompumelelo Nkosi, was at home when the shooting occurred. She recalled feeling a sudden urge to go to the bathroom just moments before, unaware that her brother was being attacked.
“I thought it was just the boys outside playing with a gun. I didn’t realise he had been killed,” she said.
Nkosi’s close friend, Nkensi Moroosi, was also inside the house and went out to reprimand the youths playing outside.
“I saw familiar shoes on the ground and knew my friend was gone. He was such a gentle soul. I expected an accident from a car or engine mishap, not this,” Moroosi said.
Eyewitnesses and the suspect on the run
Eyewitnesses reported a suspicious car circulating the area earlier in the day. After the shooting, witnesses saw an unknown man fleeing in the same vehicle that was spotted earlier. Authorities have received the vehicle’s description but have made no arrests so far. Police are urging anyone with information to come forward to aid the investigation.
Family demands justice
The Nkosi family expressed frustration over what they perceive as a lack of urgency in solving murders in Duduza. Cindy Nkosi voiced fears that her uncle’s case might follow a troubling pattern of unresolved killings.

Rising violence in Duduza
Mkhonto, a spokesperson for the Last Battalion Anti-Crime Unit, said shootings and violent attacks have become increasingly common in Duduza. He also referenced a recent attempted attack on a Duduza SAPS officer, highlighting the dangerous environment faced daily by law enforcement and residents.
“We are committed to investigating this incident thoroughly, but we also urge the community to provide any information that could lead to the arrest of the perpetrators,” he said.

Unclear motive and community concerns
Authorities have not confirmed a motive for Nkosi’s killing. Residents fear that violent crimes in Duduza are becoming more frequent and often go unresolved. Neighbour Palesa Gama described the chaotic scene:
“It’s terrifying to live here knowing incidents like this can happen at any time.”
