Taxi Shot Up After Chilling Voice Note Threat Targets Bellville-Philippi Route

CAPE TOWN — A passenger was wounded after gunmen opened fire on a minibus taxi travelling the Bellville-Philippi route in Cape Town on Wednesday, the latest incident to leave commuters caught in the middle of ongoing taxi-related violence.
According to EWN, CATA chairperson Nkululeko Sityebi confirmed the attack, saying the minibus was in transit between the two areas when shots were fired at the vehicle.
Voice note threat preceded the shooting
Before the attack, a voice recording circulated on social media in which an unidentified individual threatened to target taxis operating along the Bellville-Philippi corridor unless a sum of money was paid to him.

Despite the apparent timing, Sityebi said investigators had not yet established a confirmed connection between the recorded threat and the shooting. The identity of the person in the voice note remains unknown.
CATA calls on authorities to act
Sityebi issued a direct call for law enforcement to respond decisively to the violence, saying:
"We condemn these acts that are taking place within CATA and also appeal to the police and law enforcement agencies to bring the perpetrators to book."
No arrests had been announced at the time of publication. The condition of the injured commuter was not disclosed.
Taxi driver shot and killed in Evaton
In related news, a taxi driver was shot and killed in Evaton, Johannesburg, on 4 March 2026. The South African Police Service opened a case of murder. According to media reports, the incident took place on the Golden Highway in Evaton. The police reported that a white Polo vehicle, which had an unconfirmed number of occupants, approached the driver while he was operating his taxi on the road and opened fire, shooting the taxi multiple times. When paramedics arrived on the scene, he was declared dead.
2 Taxi drivers killed in Ladysmith
Briefly News reported that two taxi drivers died, and two others were severely injured after gunmen shot at a taxi in St Chads, Ladysmith. The attack was believed to be linked to the ongoing Klipriver Taxi Association conflict over the Joburg-Ladysmith route KwaZulu-Natal police were reportedly investigating two counts of murder and two of attempted murder.
