GAUTENG — A known gangster has been taken in for questioning in connection with the deadly shooting in Reiger Park, which left four people dead.
28-year-old Constable Sphiwe Sibeko and 29-year-old Constable Thapelo Tlomatsane, members of the Anti-Gang Unit, were ambushed and killed on Friday, 7 August 2026. They were killed after responding to another shooting which left two women dead.
Addressing the media in Reiger Park on 10 August 2026, Acting Police Minister Feroz Cachalia confirmed that one person was taken in for questioning in connection with the murders.

Person is a known gang member
Speaking at the briefing, the Acting Police Minister confirmed that the person who was taken in for questioning was a known gang member.
“The person of interest is a known gang member, leader of one of the gangs in the area, who faces six other charges and is currently out on bail,” he confirmed.
Professor Cachalia also confirmed that a multidisciplinary team worked tirelessly overnight and during the weekend to make progress in the case. This has resulted in police also recovering the R5 rifles which belonged to the officers.
Bail system faces public scrutiny
The revelation that the suspect was out on bail at the time of the alleged attack drew immediate criticism from members of the public on social media.

Police Commissioner urges community to speak up after Reiger Park shooting
Briefly News reported that Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane weighed in on the Reiger Park murders.
Two members of the Anti-Gang Unit were killed after they responded to a shooting in the area in Gauteng.
Acting National Police Commissioner confirmed that specialised investigative units have been mobilised to track down the killers.
