GAUTENG - Prominent Mpumalanga taxi boss Joe ‘Ferrari’ Sibanyoni is due to appear before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry on 28 August 2026, with a follow-up sitting scheduled for 2 September 2026.

ENCA’s Pule Letshwiti-Jones confirmed the news of his appearance on Monday, 17 August 2026. Letshwiti-Jones announced the Brigitte Mabandla Justice College, where the Madlanga Commission is sitting.

The gap between the two appearances is linked to a separate court matter. Sibanyoni is expected to appear before the Delmas Magistrate’s Court on 1 September 2026, where he faces charges of extortion and money laundering involving allegations of more than R2 million in alleged protection fees.

What Sibanyoni must answer at the Madlanga Commission

When Sibanyoni takes the stand before the Commission, he will be required to address a range of serious matters.

These include his alleged links to the Kwagga 20, described as a notorious criminal group operating in Sibasa, Songa and Mpumalanga. He is also expected to speak to his relationship with the late taxi boss Jothan "Mswazi" Msibi and to account for what he knows about Steve Motsumi.

Sibanyoni has been named in prior Commission testimony as a central figure in the alleged "Big Five" or "The Firm" network, a cartel accused of involvement in drug trafficking, extortion, contract killings, tender fraud, and vehicle hijackings, with alleged ties to politicians and law enforcement.

His interactions with law enforcement have drawn particular scrutiny. Suspended SAPS Sergeant Fannie Nkosi of the Gauteng Organised Crime Unit previously testified about visiting Sibanyoni's home on at least 12 recorded occasions and allegedly sharing confidential police information with him. Nkosi remains in custody.

Uncertainty over Sibanyoni's appearance

Despite the scheduled dates, sources say it remains unclear whether Sibanyoni and his legal team will attend on 28 August. Attorneys are reportedly still making representations before the National Director of Public Prosecutions and have indicated they have not been given sufficient time to prepare.
