GAUTENG - Controversial businessman Steven Motsumi has been served with a subpoena compelling him to appear before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry between 4 and 7 September 2026.
eNCA’s Pule Letshwiti-Jones broke the news on Tuesday, 18 August 2026, citing sources who confirmed the subpoena was issued several weeks ago. The four-day scheduled appearance signals that commissioners have substantial ground to cover with Motsumi.

Who is Motsumi?
Motsumi has emerged as one of the most talked-about names at the Madlanga Commission, which is probing criminality, political interference, and corruption within the criminal justice system. Multiple senior police officers, including former KwaZulu-Natal Hawks head Major-General Lesetja Senona, have publicly described him as "very dangerous," with some initially hesitant to name him on record.

KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has referred to Motsumi as a powerful figure and alleged "boss of criminality."
What Motsumi will be questioned on
According to sources cited by eNCA, Motsumi is expected to face questioning on several issues, including his relationship with the late taxi boss Jothan Msibi, and his alleged connections to the so-called Big Five.
Msibi, who was known as "King Mswazi," died in 2024. Testimony already heard at the commission has suggested Motsumi assumed a more prominent role within the alleged network following Msibi's death.
