SOUTH AFRICA — The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for damaging winds affecting the southern coast on 26 August 2026, with maritime conditions expected to deteriorate across a wide stretch of coastline. This is after it issued a similar warning for the Eastern Cape days ago.
According to SAWS, the warning covers the sea area between Table Bay and Cape Agulhas from the morning, with the system moving eastwards to reach Plettenberg Bay during the afternoon hours. Authorities anticipate that the conditions will create navigation difficulties for vessels at sea and pose a risk of damage to small harbour craft along the affected stretch of coastline. Localised disruption to beachfront activities is also expected. SAWS did not issue any fire danger warnings or additional advisories for the same period.
Cape Town itself is forecast to remain fine despite proximity to the warning zone, with moderate southerly winds and a maximum temperature of 26°C. Further east, George will experience strong easterly winds during the afternoon alongside a high of 18°C.
Rain and cloud for eastern coastal cities
Regions east of the warning zone face a different picture, with cloudy skies and rain expected across several major cities. Gqeberha, KuGompo City, Durban, and Mbombela are all forecast to receive rainfall during the day. Durban is expected to reach 22°C alongside isolated showers, while Pietermaritzburg faces morning fog before isolated rain moves in, with temperatures climbing to a high of 19°C.

Inland, conditions are expected to remain largely settled. Pretoria and Johannesburg will see partly cloudy skies with temperatures ranging between 9°C and 27°C. Vereeniging is forecast to reach 26°C after an overnight low of 4°C. In the Northern Cape, Upington stands out with a high of 32°C, starting fine before partly cloudy conditions develop in the afternoon. Mahikeng, Vryburg, and Kimberley are expected to follow a similar pattern.
Bloemfontein will remain fine throughout the day, with temperatures ranging from 5°C to 26°C. Residents along the southern coast are advised to exercise caution near the shore and harbour areas for the duration of 26 August 2026.
