Global ocean temperatures climbed to a record 21.1°C on 22 August, according to the European Earth observation agency Copernicus, surpassing the previous daily record of 21.09°C logged in March 2024.
According to News24, Copernicus attributed the milestone to a combination of human-caused climate change and a developing El Niño weather pattern in the tropical Pacific. The timing of the record is particularly notable. Ocean surface temperatures in the Southern Hemisphere typically peak between March and April, at the close of the Austral summer.

Samantha Burgess, strategic lead for climate at Copernicus' European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, said El Niño was layering additional heat on top of decades of human-driven warming. She noted that elevated ocean temperatures heighten risks for marine ecosystems and the coastal communities that depend on them.
Warming oceans fuel a chain of consequences
Higher sea-surface temperatures set off a broader chain of environmental consequences. Warmer water accelerates sea level rise and draws greater volumes of moisture into the atmosphere, a process that intensifies storms and amplifies heat on land. At the same time, the ocean's ability to absorb carbon dioxide weakens, reducing one of the planet's primary mechanisms for moderating atmospheric warming.
Isolated but significant temperature records have also been observed in specific regions, including the western Mediterranean Sea and around the Earth's poles. Copernicus projects that this warming trajectory will continue as El Niño sustains its influence on global ocean metrics.
