WESTERN CAPE - Democratic Alliance leader Geordin Hill-Lewis has called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to censure Water and Sanitation Minister Pemmy Majodina after she exchanged profanities with a disabled community member during a public event.

The altercation occurred at the launch of an upgraded pump station in Kouga, where a meeting between Majodina and residents deteriorated into a heated confrontation that included profane language directed at a member of the public.

The incident happened after a resident began speaking out of turn, prompting Majodina to request that he be removed from the hall. As the man was being escorted out, he directed the Afrikaans expletive "jou ma se ..." at the minister. Majodina responded in kind, saying "Phuma! Jou ma se ... ook."

Hill-Lewis demands Presidential action

The Cape Town Mayor posted his criticism on X on Thursday, 10 September 2026, saying the conduct was unacceptable and warranted an official response from the country's highest office. He described the incident as part of a troubling pattern, noting it was the second time within the space of a few weeks that a senior ANC government figure had publicly insulted or sworn at ordinary South Africans. The first was Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero.

"This profanity from Minister Pemmy Majodina is unacceptable and deserves censure from the President," Hill-Lewis wrote.

He went further to link the conduct to what he characterised as an organisation in decline, arguing that the ANC was resorting to insults as it grappled with internal and public pressure. AfriForum has also called for Majodina's dismissal.
