SA Weather: Severe Thunderstorms, Damaging Winds and Extreme Fire Danger Forecast for Wednesday

• The South African Weather Service issued yellow level 2 warnings for severe thunderstorms across Gauteng, North West and Limpopo on Wednesday
• Damaging coastal winds are set to disrupt beachfront activities and navigation across several Eastern Cape municipalities
• Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected in parts of the Western Cape and Northern Cape

South Africans in several provinces are being urged to take precautions as the South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a series of impact-based warnings ahead of Wednesday, 30 September 2026.

Thunderstorm and wind warnings

SAWS has placed Gauteng, the central to eastern parts of North West, and the central to western parts of Limpopo under a yellow level 2 severe thunderstorm warning. Residents in these areas should prepare for heavy downpours, damaging winds, hail and excessive lightning. Localised flooding on susceptible roads, low-lying areas and bridges is possible, along with damage to settlements and infrastructure.

A separate yellow level 2 warning has been issued for damaging winds affecting the Nelson Mandela Bay, Buffalo City, Ndlambe, Nqgushwa and Sunday's River Valley Municipalities in the Eastern Cape. These winds are expected to cause localised damage, disrupt beachfront activities and make coastal navigation difficult.

Fire danger and heat advisories

Extremely high fire danger conditions are forecast for the Matzikama, Cederberg and Bergrivier Municipalities in the Western Cape, as well as the Kamiesberg Municipality in the Northern Cape. Kamiesberg is also under an advisory for extremely hot and uncomfortable conditions.

Here is what the rest of the country can expect on Wednesday:

Gauteng, Limpopo and Mpumalanga will see cloudy, cold conditions with scattered showers and thundershowers throughout the day.

North West starts cloudy, windy and cold before becoming partly cloudy with scattered showers and thundershowers later in the day.

Free State will be mostly partly cloudy, windy and cold to cool, with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers, apart from the southeastern parts which should stay drier.

Northern Cape can expect isolated showers and thundershowers in the northeast, while the rest of the province enjoys a fine, windy and cool to warm day. Morning fog patches are likely along the coast.

Western Cape will be fine and warm to hot, with very hot conditions expected along the West Coast District. The UVB sunburn index is rated "very high," and residents are advised to protect themselves against prolonged sun exposure.

Eastern Cape faces a mixed day. The western half will be partly cloudy in the south before clearing to a fine and cool to warm day, with coastal winds picking up. The eastern half will see cloudy conditions along the coast with rain east of the Kei River, otherwise a fine and cool day.

KwaZulu-Natal will have morning fog over the interior, followed by cloudy and cool to cold conditions with isolated showers and rain.

South Africans are encouraged to monitor updates from the South African Weather Service and take appropriate precautions, particularly in areas under active warnings.
