Mamelodi Sundowns have become the only South African club to lift the Premier Soccer League title for four seasons in a row. The Brazilians clinched their historical title on Wednesday afternoon when they beat Tshwane rivals, SuperSport United, at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.
Goals through Kermit Erasmus, Themba Zwane and Lebogang Maboe ensured coach Manqoba Mngqithi’s troops broke the records.
Said Mngqithi to SuperSport TV:
"Up until now there was only one game where we didn't dominate possession. That was the game against Cape Town City away. But we still won that game 3-0. All the matches that we've played in the Premiership, we've dominated. We are looking forward to the last three games.
"We have our own targets. We would have loved to finish the league with a different number of points. But we can still get close. We did not have Peter and Gift today but we hope they are back for the last three games.
"I miss the fans singing. But the pandemic is still here and we can't afford to have people in congested areas. It's still very important to stay cautious and be responsible as a nation."
Sundowns won the title with three games to spare and are set to finish their 2020/21 DStv Premiership campaign with the likes of Swallows FC, Cape Town City, and Bloemfontein Celtic.
Having bagged three league titles in a row and made it their 10th in the PSL history last season, Sundowns hd been hoping to become the first team to lift this season’s title under new sponsors.
The league’s governing body announced that sponsor ABSA was set to part company with the PSL at the end of the last term.

Following that development, DStv came on board and the Tshwane giants are now the new winners as they have lost only one game out of 27 matches so far.
Meanwhile, Briefly News reported that the South African Premier Soccer League side is reportedly setting sights on a number of international players. The Brazilians were almost home and dry as far as their DStv Premiership challenge was concerned.
As they were fresh from a win over TS Galaxy a fortnight ago, the win that propelled them to 57 points on the log table, the Tshwane side is still looking for new recruits.
