Smith’s title chase
Seeded second heading into the Finals, the Durban-born surfer carries both form and experience as he bids for his maiden world crown. The competition will be staged on the single best day of surf between now and 4 September, with officials eyeing a powerful swell early next week.
“Right now, Cloudbreak is flat with strong onshore winds and rain,” said Renato Hickel, WSL VP of Tours and Competition.
“We’re watching a new swell building that could deliver four-to-six foot, possibly five-to-seven foot waves by Monday are Restaurants is also an option, with even bigger surf forecast for 2 September.”
Restaurants could be decisive
While Cloudbreak is the traditional stage, forecasts currently favour Restaurants, a world-class reef break renowned for its hollow perfection.
Smith is the only surfer in the men’s Final 5 to have previously competed there, famously posting an 18.30 heat total in 2013. That advantage could prove vital should the event shift to the break directly in front of Tavarua Island Resort.
The road to the title
The men’s bracket begins with Italo Ferreira (Brazil) against Jack Robinson (Australia). The winner faces Griffin Colapinto (USA) before meeting Smith in Match 3. Victory there would propel the South African into the one-heat Title Match against top seed Yago Dora (Brazil).
Long regarded as one of South Africa’s greatest surfers, Smith has yet to capture the sport’s ultimate prize. Now, with Kolisi and a nation behind him, Fiji may provide his best, and perhaps final, chance to etch his name into world surfing history.
