  • The 27-year-old's decision to buy his mom a new house sparked different reactions from netizens on social media

Phumelele “The Truth” Cafu has set a perfect example for other South African athletes, who are often known for squandering fortunes and retiring broke after commanding hefty paydays.

Unlike many of his contemporaries who pour their earnings into luxury cars, high-end fashion, and glittering jewellery, Cafu has chosen a path of lasting value.

Hailing from Duncan Village in East London, Cafu secured a seven-figure payday from his unification clash against WBC and The Ring titleholder, Jose Rodriguez, in the United States on July 19, 2025.

The former WBO junior-bantamweight world champion has defied the stereotype by investing in a luxury home for his mother in Amalinda, East London.

The house, said to be worth R2.2 million, was bought by the boxer for his mother, and he explained the reason behind the decision.

“My dream was always to move my mom out of the township. At first, I thought of getting her a place in Sandton, but I had to respect that her roots are here at home. In the end, it was about giving her what she truly wanted,” he explained.

The 27-year-old father of two emphasised the importance of financial guidance, especially for athletes and black people, as many grow up without a strong understanding of money management.

He added that his promoter, Larry Wainstein, has arranged for him to meet both a financial adviser and a tax consultant upon his return to Johannesburg to help secure his future.

While he currently rents a two-bedroom apartment in Johannesburg, his ultimate goal is to buy a home of his own, a dream that drives him to chase another world title.
