DURBAN — South Africa will begin their three-match Test series against Australia without pace spearhead Kagiso Rabada, who has been ruled out of the opening match at Kingsmead Stadium after failing to recover fully from a right hamstring injury.

Rabada sustained the injury during winter training and has not featured in any competitive cricket since the Indian Premier League in May. Captain Temba Bavuma confirmed the playing XI on Thursday, the eve of the first Test, which is scheduled to start on Friday, 9 October 2026.

South Africa's XI and Selection Calls

The Proteas have named the following side: Aiden Markram, Ryan Rickelton, David Bedingham, Temba Bavuma (c), Tristan Stubbs, Wiaan Mulder, Kyle Verreynne (wk), Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Simon Harmer, Anrich Nortje.

The most notable inclusion is Nortje, who last played Test cricket in March 2023 against West Indies—a match that also marked his most recent first-class appearance. The 32-year-old has been sidelined by a series of back and hip injuries.

However, he impressed sufficiently in training to earn selection ahead of Dane Paterson and Gerald Coetzee. He recently played for the Rotterdam Dockers in the inaugural European T20 League.

Bavuma was direct about what made Nortje impossible to overlook.

"It's hard to ignore his X-factor. There aren't many guys around who are bowling 150kph plus, and I think as a batter, that's not something that I would look forward to," he said, according to cricket.com.au.

The side also includes two spinners in Keshav Maharaj and Simon Harmer, with Wiaan Mulder serving as the third seamer. Mulder was preferred over fellow all-rounder Corbin Bosch because of his batting, having scored an unbeaten 367 against Zimbabwe last year.

David Bedingham takes the number three spot, a role he has not occupied in his 26 Test innings. Nine of the 11 players who featured in South Africa's World Test Championship final victory over Australia in June last year retain their places, with Rabada and Lungi Ngidi — also sidelined by a hamstring injury — the only absentees from that core group.

Rabada targeting second Test return

Bavuma said the medical team opted for a cautious approach with Rabada, prioritising his long-term availability over rushing him back for the opener.

"It was not an easy one. I think we did go the conservative route to give him a couple of extra days to get as close as he can be to 100 per cent fitness. As soon as he gets the green light, we expect him to be within that starting lineup," Bavuma told reporters.

South Africa are hopeful Rabada will be fit in time for the second Test, which begins on 18 October at St George's Park in Gqeberha. The third and final Test is scheduled for 27 October at Newlands in Cape Town.

Kagiso Rabada’s Australia record adds to Proteas selection headache

Briefly News previously reported that Kagiso Rabada’s fitness remained a major talking point ahead of South Africa’s opening Test against Australia in Durban.

Temba Bavuma had earlier provided an encouraging update after Rabada completed a two-day intra-squad match, but the fast bowler remained under the medical team’s care. His strong record against Australia made his eventual absence a significant blow for the Proteas.
