Chippa United chairman Siviwe Mpengesi has come under fire from the Economic Freedom Fighters for hiring embattled coach Luc Eymael as a technical director.
Mpengesi recently axed coach Dan Malesela following a 5-1 drubbing at the hands of Maritzburg United in the DStv Premiership last weekend.
In the wake of that decision to part ways with the former Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns defender, the Chilli Boys boss opted to hand the coaching reins to assistant coach Siyabulela Gwambi.
However, the appointment of the Belgian tactician has ruffled the feathers in the South African football scene and the Economic Freedom Fighters have joined in to lash out at Mpengesi. The party said in a statement as per The Sowetan.
“This racist was rejected by Safa last year when he planned his return to the country and province‚ and [Safa] announced that it intended to oppose his application for a work permit at home affairs.
"The owner of Chippa United has once more stunned the nation and province by appointing the same racist coach.”
Eymael’s employability in local football remains under scrutiny after he was accused of racism in Tanzania whilst in charge of Young Africans.
Media reports surfaced sometime last year that the former Free State Stars coach referred to the club’s fans as ‘illiterate and monkeys”. The EFF added.
"We want to reiterate our stance that we will ensure Luc Eymael won't work in our province‚ he is not welcome and we don't have room for racists in this country.
“If Siviwe Mpengesi knows what's best for his team Chippa United‚ he will withdraw the appointment of this unrepentant racist from Belgium‚ the country of King Leopold who killed black people in Africa.
“We are a country with a dark past [that] still deals…with its challenges of racism…we don't need another racist to add to our problems."
Moreover, the trigger happy Mpengesi initially tried to hire Eymael in December last year just minutes after sacking then-coach Lehlohonolo Seema.
Safa expressed its unhappiness with the decision in a statement issued after Eymael was confirmed as Seema's replacement.
Briefly.co.za also reported that Eymael denied signing with Chippa. Speaking to a local football publication, the coach said that he had spoken to the team's management but had not signed any papers.
His denial came after the team released a statement claiming that they had signed Eymael as senior coach of the team until the end of the season.
In the statement, a confident Chippa United had even said that Eymael would be heading the team in a match against Supersport United at Lucas Moripe stadium in 2021.
