UEFA Club Rankings 2024: Man City Lead, Arsenal, Man United Miss Top 10
- Manchester City is the best-ranked team in Europe after UEFA updated its list of club rankings for the 2024/2025 season
- EPL dominates the list, with Liverpool and Chelsea making the cut despite the lack of Champions League football last season
- UEFA makes the rankings by taking into account the club's performances in its main club competitions for the last five seasons
UEFA has updated its list of club rankings as the top leagues in Europe resume for the 2024/2025 season.
The English Premier League, La Liga, Ligue and Serie A started this weekend, with the Bundesliga set to follow suit next week.
It is set to be another long season, with the recently revamped FIFA Club World Cup taking place at the end of the season. It will be hosted in the United States of America.
This season will also see UEFA change the format for its club competitions after deciding to ditch the round-robin group stage format.
In the rankings, Manchester City still lead despite failing to defend their Champions League title last season. They were beaten by eventual champions Real Madrid in the quarter-finals.
Liverpool are fourth behind Bayern Munich despite playing in the Europa League last season. Chelsea are the only other English side in the top 10 despite missing out on the Champions League for the second season in a row.
How are club coefficients calculated?
Questions are bound to arise on why a team like Arsenal is only 19th despite being on a steady trajectory under Mikel Arteta. The Gunners' lack of Champions League football for six years has affected their rankings.
UEFA looks at the performance of the clubs in its main club competitions over the last five years. Clubs are awarded two points each for every win in the Champions League and the Europa League and further bonus points depending on how far you get in the competition. The number of points varies slightly depending on the competition a club participates in.
These points are also helpful in determining which association (league) gets an extra spot in the Champions League for the following season. The better clubs from a specific league perform across all the UEFA competitions, the higher the chances of having extra representatives in Europe next season.
Arsenal's position is expected to improve as the season progresses after they qualified for the Champions League again.
