Inter Miami was pegged back after conceding just after halftime, but Uruguay striker Luis Suarez restored the two-goal lead minutes later.

They conceded a penalty at the hour mark but hung on to secure the win. The Supporters' Shield is given to the team with the best regular season record.

"The first objective has been achieved and now we have to think about what's next," Messi said via BBC.
"The first round is three games but then it's one game and anything can happen. But we have the great advantage of playing all the games at home, which is what we were looking for. We are very strong at home."

The young club will now set its sights on the MLS Cup, which Colombus Crew currently holds.
