Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has commented on the latest injury suffered by the Brazilians' captain, Themba Zwane, during their Betway Premiership clash with Magesi FC on Sunday, September 14, 2025.

The Betway Premiership defending champions continued their good form in the league this season as they defeated Magesi FC 3-0 at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium.

A lone strike from Kutlwano Letlhaku and a brace from Bafana Bafana striker Iqraam Rayners gave Masandawana the deserved win and also moved them to the top of the league standings.

The win over Magesi FC was marred by Zwane's injury, and it's bad news for both Cardoso and Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos.

Cardoso speaks on Zwane's latest injury

Cardoso, after the game, shared an update about Zwane's latest injury and confirmed that he had already reached out to the team doctor.

“Let’s see what happened, as I understand from the doctor, it’s not the same thing he had before. Let’s hope it’s nothing serious,” the Portuguese coach said.

Zwane being ruled out for yet another long period could disrupt Broos' plans of including him in his Bafana Bafana squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. The Belgian tactician earlier confirmed that he's counting on the Sundowns captain for the AFCON and also the 2026 FIFA World Cup, if they qualify.

Broos is a fan of Zwane, and he included him in his 48-man preliminary squad for the games against Lesotho and Nigeria, but had to drop him from the final list after he got injured.

Looking ahead, Sundowns face a demanding schedule, starting with their clash against Marumo Gallants on Wednesday. Cardoso acknowledged the pressure of their upcoming fixtures, stressing how congested the calendar had become.

“We have midweek matches lined up, and by the end of the month, we’ll have played six or seven games,” he noted.
“It’s up to us to manage it properly because if we don’t, it could come back to cost us.”
