Free State MEC for Sports Zanele Sifuba hosted an awards ceremony on 15 August to celebrate athletes from the province who have distinguished themselves at the highest levels of their respective sports. Mokoena was among those honoured, with the award acknowledging his consistent performances for both club and country.

**Mokoena Speaks Out After Recognition**

The Bethlehem-born midfielder took to social media to share his appreciation following the ceremony, writing: "Honoured to receive an Excellence Award from the Free State MEC. Grateful for where I come from and excited for what's still ahead."

The recognition comes shortly after Mokoena represented South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he scored a crucial penalty in a 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic.

**A Career Built on Consistency**

Now 29, Mokoena has established himself as one of the most reliable midfielders in South African football since making the move from the now defunct SuperSport United to Mamelodi Sundowns. Across 181 competitive appearances for the Brazilians, he has contributed 20 goals and 14 assists.

At international level, Mokoena has earned 54 caps for Bafana Bafana, finding the net on 10 occasions for the national side.
