  • Wicknell Chivayo had been personally financing a stadium and high school in his hometown of Chivhu at the time of his death
  • His brother, known as G6 Chivhayo, has committed to continuing both infrastructure projects in honour of the late businessman
  • Key details about the stadium's specifications, timeline and intended use remain unconfirmed

Wicknell Chivayo's brother has pledged to carry on the construction of a stadium and high school in Chivhu, the businessman's hometown, following his death in a helicopter crash on 30 September 2026.

Chivayo had been personally funding both facilities before he died, according to a report published by TUKO.co.ke on 8 October 2026. Neither project had been completed at the time of his passing, leaving their futures uncertain until G6 Chivhayo stepped forward with a commitment to see them through.

Chivayo's football footprint

The stadium project adds an infrastructure dimension to a sporting legacy Chivayo built through years of high-profile involvement in Zimbabwean football.

His ties to Highlanders FC were among the most publicly documented. A video resurfaced showing him celebrating a Highlanders goal at Barbourfields Stadium in Bulawayo in 2017, well before his later multimillion-dollar sponsorship of the club.

His generosity extended to rivals, too; in May 2026, he rewarded Dynamos FC with a new 65-seater bus and US$50,000 despite the side losing the Harare Derby to CAPS United.

After his death, Scottland FC supporters gathered at Rufaro Stadium to pay tribute to Chivayo and his wife, Lucy Muteke, ahead of a cup match against Bulawayo Chiefs.

What happens to the Chivhu Stadium

Details surrounding the stadium's design, intended use, and construction timeline have not been independently confirmed. It remains unclear whether the facility is intended primarily for football or broader sporting purposes, and no completion date has been publicly announced.

G6 Chivhayo's reported pledge places the continuation of the project in the hands of the family, though the full scope of their plans has yet to be disclosed.

Chivayo died alongside his wife and other occupants when their helicopter came down near Marondera in Mashonaland East. Zimbabwean authorities and his family confirmed his death.
