A fresh name has entered the running for the Bafana Bafana head coaching position, with Uruguayan coach Gustavo Poyet now reportedly on the South African Football Association's radar.
French outlet Onze has reported that the former Chelsea midfielder, currently a free agent, is attracting interest from multiple national teams. "Discussions are very mature between the FAF and Gustavo Poyet for the Verts' bench," the publication stated, noting that Algeria appear to be ahead in the race, while Poland and South Africa have also registered interest in the experienced coach.
The development comes at a sensitive moment for SAFA. Reports had widely indicated that the association had agreed terms with Pitso Mosimane to return to the Bafana Bafana hot seat, yet no formal announcement has materialised, leaving the appointment in limbo.
Poyet's Record Across Club and International Football
Poyet built his reputation in English football, taking over at Brighton & Hove Albion in 2009 and leading the club to the League One title two years later. He subsequently stepped up to the Premier League with Sunderland in 2013, where he guided the club through a seemingly hopeless relegation battle before steering them to the League Cup final in 2014.
His career then expanded globally, with spells at AEK Athens, Real Betis, Shanghai Shenhua, Bordeaux and Universidad Católica. In South Korea, he led Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors to a domestic double, claiming both the K League 1 title and the Korean Cup.

Greece Stint Raised Poyet's International Profile
Poyet's most prominent international role came when he took charge of Greece between 2022 and 2024. He overhauled the national team's approach and introduced a modern tactical identity that earned Greece promotion to League B of the UEFA Nations League. Greece also came close to qualifying for Euro 2024, only to fall in a penalty shootout.
With the Mosimane announcement yet to be confirmed and Algeria reportedly at the front of the queue for Poyet's signature, SAFA faces a potentially significant decision in the coming days regarding who will lead the national team forward.
