Mamelodi Sundowns have avoided further FIFA punishment after their hard-fought victory over Al Ahli in the Intercontinental Cup, with the governing body's disciplinary rules explaining why the South African champions are not facing a team misconduct fine.
The Brazilians defeated Al Ahli 2-1 at Loftus Versfeld on 19 September 2026, with Nuno Santos scoring both goals. FIFA's official match report confirmed that the result sent Sundowns through to the Challenger Cup stage of the competition.
The match was not without disciplinary incidents, but Sundowns did not reach the threshold required for FIFA's additional team sanction.
FIFA rule that matters to Mamelodi Sundowns
FIFA's disciplinary framework lists a US$10,000 fine (about R164,000) for a yellow card in its listed men's club competitions. The same framework provides for a separate US$15,000 team misconduct fine (about R246,000).

However, that additional team fine does not automatically apply whenever players are booked. The FIFA rules state that it is imposed when individual disciplinary sanctions are given to 5 or more players from the same team during the match.

Sundowns turn attention to next FIFA challenge
The victory over Al Ahli means Sundowns remain in contention for a place in the Intercontinental Cup final.
FIFA confirmed that the Challenger Cup winner will advance to face defending champions Paris Saint-Germain in the final. The remaining matches will be staged in one host country, which FIFA said it will confirm later.
