DStv's New R479 Sports Package Keeps Springbok Tests Behind R500 Premium Wall

DStv's New R479 Sports Package Keeps Springbok Tests Behind R500 Premium Wall

  • DStv is launching a new Sports package on 17 September 2026, replacing Compact for existing subscribers at no extra cost
  • The Sports tier includes Premier League, PSL, Proteas cricket and limited URC coverage, but excludes Springbok Tests
  • Fans who want to watch the Springboks will need to pay R500 more per month for the full Premium package

DStv is introducing a new Sports package on 17 September 2026, designed specifically for subscribers who primarily use their decoder for live sport. At R479 per month on satellite or R399 via DStv Stream, the tier carries more than 115 channels, including 17 dedicated sports channels.

Existing Compact subscribers will be migrated automatically to the new Sports package at no additional cost. The upgrade brings meaningful gains: every Premier League, UEFA Champions League and PSL fixture is included, along with SA20, IPL and Proteas cricket. Domestic rugby fans also gain access to the Currie Cup, the SA Cup and one United Rugby Championship match per week.

What Sports Subscribers Will Miss

The package does not include Springbok Tests. International rugby, the remainder of the URC schedule, Formula 1, MotoGP, tennis and the golf majors are all reserved for Premium subscribers. DStv has not introduced a standalone rugby add-on or a dedicated Springbok tier, meaning supporters of the national team have only one option.

Premium costs R979 per month on satellite, a difference of exactly R500 above the Sports price before the access fee. Once that fee is factored in, Business Bagel calculated the month-to-month satellite bill at R1,104.

One Way to Reduce the Premium Cost

DStv is offering a reduced rate for subscribers willing to commit. Satellite customers who sign a 24-month Premium contract will pay R799 per month with the access fee included, compared to R979 on a standard month-to-month basis. Premium via DStv Stream is also priced at R799 without requiring a long-term contract.

Cricket, previously locked inside Premium, now sits within the Sports tier, which marks one of the more significant shifts in the restructure for households moving across from Compact.
