Referee Andrea Piardi oversaw a chaotic contest that included communication system failures, ongoing clock disputes and a remarkable spell in which Australia were reduced to just 11 players. Despite all of it, Erasmus was clear: his team lost because they did not perform well enough, not because of the circumstances around them.
Springboks rolled the dice
According to Rugbypass, Erasmus admitted the selection had been experimental, with several players in the starting line-up who had not featured together for some time. He declined to use the disruptions as justification for the defeat, pointing instead to the Springboks' own inability to execute their game plan.

The Springboks found themselves 25 points behind at one stage before staging a dramatic comeback that fell just short. Erasmus acknowledged the team had put themselves in that position.

Erasmus praises officials despite chaos
Rather than criticise the officials, Erasmus went out of his way to commend Piardi and his team for managing to keep the game together after their communication equipment failed, forcing them to coordinate via mobile phones.
"I thought they got a lot of things right by being on the telephone," he said.
Erasmus also pushed back on suggestions that fatigue from the Rugby Championship schedule, which followed a victorious series against New Zealand, had contributed to the loss.
He added that the players were fully aware of how South African supporters were feeling following the defeat and that the result was entirely down to the team's performance on the night.
