Rugby Legend’s World Cup Medal Goes Under the Hammer Amid Financial Struggles

A Rugby World Cup winner’s medal from one of England’s greatest sporting moments is going under the hammer as its owner faces ongoing financial difficulties.

Former England captain Lawrence Dallaglio has put his 2003 World Cup winner’s medal up for auction, with an estimated value of £50,000 to £80,000 — roughly R1.09 million to R1.74 million.

The auction is scheduled for 13 October 2026. Dallaglio started at No. 8 when England defeated Australia 20-17 after extra time in the final in Sydney on 22 November 2003.

Other rugby memorabilia also going under the hammer

The Telegraph reports that the auction extends well beyond the prized 2003 World Cup medal. The collection includes Dallaglio’s 2007 World Cup runners-up medal, estimated at £10,000 (about R217,500), as well as his 2003 Six Nations winner’s medal, expected to fetch around £5,000 (R108,750).

Medals from his successful spell with Wasps have also been put up for sale, with each valued at approximately £8,000 (R174,000).

Other items include his British & Irish Lions cap, England cap and various player-of-the-year awards. Taken together, the memorabilia could bring in as much as £180,000, equivalent to roughly R3.92 million.

Auction house Budds highlighted the significance of the standout item, describing the 2003 World Cup medal as “the pinnacle of world rugby and the singular greatest achievement in English rugby history”.

Financial difficulties add context to sale

Dallaglio was declared bankrupt in May 2025 after accumulating significant debts, including money owed to HM Revenue and Customs. His bankruptcy has subsequently been extended to August 2027, according to reports.

Speaking about the period following his divorce and financial problems, Dallaglio acknowledged that he could have handled matters differently.

“I could’ve done things a lot better,” he said.

The 54-year-old retired from professional rugby in 2008 after winning 85 England caps and later moved into broadcasting.

The auction therefore brings a remarkable chapter of his playing career back into focus, almost 23 years after England lifted the Webb Ellis Cup in Sydney.
