Darryl Jones, a former Neath player and longtime rugby coach whose career spanned club sides across Wales and England, has died. Neath RFC announced the news on Monday, honouring a man whose influence extended across generations of players in the Welsh valleys.

Jones first pulled on a Neath jersey in 1964, and his connection to the club never fully faded. He also represented Oxford University, captaining the Dark Blues from fly-half during the 1972 centenary Varsity Match.

Before becoming a prominent club coach, Jones spent two decades at the helm of the Neath College rugby programme, producing a remarkable run of silverware.

Under his guidance, the college claimed the British colleges' competition 11 times and the Rosslyn Park Schools' Sevens on three occasions, in addition to numerous Welsh Colleges, Welsh Schools and All-England sevens titles.

That grounding in youth development shaped his broader coaching philosophy. He moved into club rugby with Aberavon, leading them to First Division glory in 1995, before engineering one of his most celebrated achievements at Neath the following year.

There, he integrated a generation of talented backs into an already powerful forward unit, steering the side to the first Welsh league title of the professional era. The team was captained by lock Gareth Llewellyn.

League titles at Bristol and Newport

Jones subsequently took up a role at Bristol, where he worked under Australia's World Cup-winning coach Bob Dwyer. The two helped the club earn promotion back to the Premiership on the first attempt in 1999.

In 2004, he delivered another league triumph, this time with Newport, who went the entire season unbeaten at Rodney Parade across both league and cup competitions to claim the Welsh Premier Division title.

In its tribute, Neath said Jones "influenced more than a generation of rugby footballers in the Neath area," adding that "he will live on in the memories of his many charges.

"The club also recalled Jones's guiding belief: "Give me a group of boys from the Neath area — Skewen and Briton Ferry up to Banwen — and I'll produce a rugby team to beat the best."
