Dave Rennie Explains How All Blacks Bounced Back From ‘Failed’ Springboks Series to Crush Australia

  • New Zealand ran in seven tries against Australia at Eden Park on Saturday, extending their unbeaten record at the Auckland ground to 54 matches
  • Coach Dave Rennie credited the team's improvement to lessons drawn from a painful 3-1 series loss to the Springboks the previous month
  • Winger Leroy Carter scored but appeared to pick up a leg injury, raising concerns ahead of next week's second Test in Sydney

New Zealand delivered a dominant second-half performance to dismantle Australia 50-19 at Eden Park on Saturday, retaining the Bledisloe Cup and stretching their unbeaten record at the Auckland venue to 54 matches.

The All Blacks scored five of their seven tries after the break, pulling away from a Wallabies side that had entered the contest with genuine ambitions following a victory over South Africa at home a fortnight earlier.

Rennie Points to Springbok Lessons

Head coach Dave Rennie drew a direct line between Saturday's performance and the humbling 3-1 series defeat to the world champion Springboks that preceded it.

"We were confident in our ability, we failed in Africa," Rennie said. "There were a number of areas that needed to be better. We just lost key moments in Africa, and we won a lot of those tonight. We knew how important it was to get a result here and I thought there were a lot of big performers."

Rennie also highlighted the impact of former captain Scott Barrett, who returned for his first Test in nearly a year and brought physicality and leadership to the forward pack.

Captain Codie Taylor acknowledged the team had carried some residual hurt from the Springbok series into the match. "We were hurting a little bit," he said. "But it's awesome to come home, play in front of our fans, our people. We've missed it, and to get a result like that… hugely proud of the boys."

New Zealand will retain the Bledisloe Cup for a 23rd consecutive year regardless of next week's second Test in Sydney, though that fixture carries added weight as the two nations are scheduled to meet at Accor Stadium during the Rugby World Cup.

**Carter Injury Clouds Convincing Win**

Winger Leroy Carter finished off a strong run from Peter Lakai to score late in the match but appeared to sustain a leg injury in doing so, putting his availability for Sydney in doubt. Replacements Josh Moorby and Will Jordan also crossed for New Zealand in the closing stages, while Josh Nasser completed Australia's scoring.

Wallabies captain Harry Wilson was candid in his assessment. "It's disappointing. We came here tonight with real belief that we'd get the result, and we didn't," he said. "The start of the second half we had an opportunity to get some points and really put some pressure on them, and we missed out there. And gee-whiz, when you give the All Blacks a bit of ball, it's hard to get it back."

Taylor emphasised the significance of preserving Eden Park's storied record. "You want to do it for those men, the people that have been before you, and you just want to continue the legacy, so that's awesome," he said.
