The University of Johannesburg (UJ) is growing its reputation as a centre for academic excellence.

The university enjoyed a phenomenal rise up the ranking system for the best universities in the world.

Thanks to a rise of a magnificent 59 places, UJ now ranks among the top 1.8% of universities worldwide.

IOL reported that the results are based on the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings.

UJ performed exceptionally well in various areas, including employer reputation and staff-to-student ratio.

A statement from the university read: "UJ is now among the South African top risers, together with the University of Cape Town and the University of Pretoria – as compared to UJ’s exceptional climb of 59 places."

Briefly.co.za noted that on the African continent, UJ now ranks as the 5th best tertiary institution.
