Top 10 best police forces in Africa

The World Internal Security and Police Index (WISPI) has released a ranking of the best and worst performing police forces of the year 2017.

WISPI measures police services on their ability to address internal security. The index also extends to security companies.

Briefly.co.za with the help of buzzsouthafrica.com put together a list of top ten police services in Africa.

1. Botswana Police Service

The Botswana Police Service has been ranked #1 in Africa in terms of being the most efficient and high performing with significant inroads in fighting drugs.

2. The Rwanda National Police

The Rwanda National Police has improved its operations and is now clamping down on private security companies believing the security is a sensitive matter and should be handled by the government.

3. Algerian Police

The Algerian Police are well resourced and equipped and has been able to deal with the challenges to the security of the country.

4. Senegal

Besides winning in soccer Senegal's police force is also beating crime. The police force works quietly and keeps its operations secret due to the nature of the criminal challenges facing the country.

5. Tunisian Police Force

The Tunisian Police Force is facing increasing challenges with the number of officers being injured or worse on duty climbing each year. The police force has managed to maintain the status quo up until now. The police force is seen as one the most corrupt in Africa.

6. Egyptian Police Force

The Egyptian Police Force is low in the rankings compared to its military force which is one of the strongest in Africa. The police have been accused of undermining the rights of citizens. The police also have their hands full battling terrorism.

7. Burkino Faso Police Nationale

This police force faces massive challenges, mostly in the form of personnel amidst terror threats, the town of Saaba East there are only 20 police to protect 80,000 people.

8. Ghana Police Service

Ghana wants to have the best police force in Africa but has a long way to go. The police forces are perceived as one of the most corrupt institutions in the country.

9. South African Police Service (SAPS)

The fact that the SAPS is so low on the list is surprising but it starts to make sense when reports of corruption surface such as the report that the SAPS spent SAPS spend R52 million on 169 torches, as well as reports of thousands of firearms reported missing.

The Police in Morocco is not the most responsive but has made some gains in creating law and order but it still has many shortcomings.

The Nigerian Police Force has ranked worst in Africa and the world. The Nigerian police are known for the unprofessional conduct and corrupt practices. The present Inspector General has been accused of being involved in an N120-billion scam( R4.8bn).
