Phathu Makwarela education and early life
Makwarela was born on 26th July 1984 in Mamvuka village in Limpopo, South Africa. His parents wanted him to become an engineer. They took him to S.J. Van Der Merwe Technical High School in Lebowakgomo, Limpopo, where he did motor mechanics and passed. He later asked his uncle to help convince his parents to allow him to pursue a career in television. After they agreed, he applied at the Tshwane University of Technology in Pretoria to study TV and Film Production.

He used to send his ideas to production houses, and they would get reject it, but he pressed on. Makwarela credits his success to the Fergusons, Skeem Saam creator Winnie Serite, his co-head writer Gwydion Beynon, M-Net, and Multichoice for believing in him.
