- Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane will be facing an inquiry after a vote on Tuesday, 16 March
- Mkhwebane's fitness to hold office was originally tabled by the Democratic Alliance
- The inquiry was confirmed recently and South Africans have now taken to social media to express their thoughts
Busisiwe Mkhwebane will be facing an inquiry into her fitness to hold office. Parliament, on Tuesday 16 March, voted in support of a motion to launch an inquiry into the removal of the Public Protector.
The Democratic Alliance initiated the motion and it was supported by the African National Congress. On Tuesday, ANC Chairperson Gwede Mantashe reportedly called an emergency meeting with MPs to instruct them to vote in favour of the motion.
On Wednesday, Mkhwebane started trending on Twitter. South Africans have had various responses to the news of the inquiry. Some are supporting the motion while others are standing firmly behind Mkhwebane.
According to a report by IOL, Speaker for the National Assembly Thandi Modise said the matter involving Mkhwebane will be referred to an inquiry. News24 reported that the National Assembly had 275 votes in favour of the inquiry and 40 votes which objected to it.
Briefly.co.za took to Twitter to see what some South Africans are saying about Mkhwebane and the inquiry. Read some of the posts below:
"The DA would have never won yesterday if it wasn't for those ANC gutless fools, Advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane's future appears to be in jeopardy because we have cowards selling our country in parliament."
"One thing Busisiwe Mkhwebana does is make the office of the PP accessible to the masses. And she goes where people are. No, I'm not saying anything about your favourite honorary prof don't bore me."
"Busisiwe Mkhwebane is the Public Protector of the RET faction of the ANC. Fikile Mbalula says she's a hired gun, and remember Mbalula is a member of the ANC NEC."
"Thuli Madonsela faced the same challenges as Busisiwe Mkhwebane, especially after the Nkandla report... ANC was gunning for her head! Remember Mathole Motshekga, ANCYL & ANCWL? the difference is, she stuck to the constitution and the rule of law. Not ANC factions."
"We urge all South Africans to stand with us in support of Advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane. We owe it to ourselves, to protect our own."
Earlier, Briefly.co.za reported that ANC Chairperson Gwede Mantashe spoke on the issue with Mkhwebane. Reports say there was an emergency meeting held with the ANC caucus on Tuesday, 16 March to discuss voting in favour of an inquiry into Mkhwebane.
South Africans have taken to social media to discuss both Mkhwebane and Mantashe through two separate trending tags.
Insiders have claimed that Mantashe was firm in his opinion about the vote and stated that it would not determine Mkwebane's fate, according to a report by News24.
