South African documentary My Octopus Teacher has won an Oscar Award for the Best Documentary Film Feature. The film was the first-ever South African documentary to be streamed on Netflix.

The documentary was directed by James Reed and Pippa Ehrlich and tells a story about a diver who seeks the help of an octopus in his journey through life. It was filmed in the deep Atlantic waters of False Bay, South Africa.

Briefly News previously reported that SA documentary My Octopus Teacher scooped a BAFTA. South African documentary My Octopus Teacher has won a British Academy Film Award (BAFTA). The film has also been nominated for an Oscar.

The Netflix documentary, coordinated by Pippa Ehrlich and James Reed, tells the story of a year spent by filmmaker Craig Cultivate as he constructs a relationship with a wild octopus in the South African kelp forest off the Cape.

Elrich acknowledged the honour from the British film and TV foundation during a function that was hosted.
