Many renowned African creatives are gaining global recognition and making their continent proud. Recently, it was announced that South African Grammy winner Tyla and Nigerian singer Ayra Starr will headline the 2025 Global Citizen Festival.

According to The South African, American artists Shakira and The Weeknd will perform alongside these two African musicians at the festival, scheduled for Saturday, September 27, 2025, in Central Park, New York City. In 2024, Mzansi actress Nomzamo Mbatha hosted the event.

Shakira expressed her enthusiasm for the upcoming performance, feeling honoured to be part of this historic festival.

"I’m honoured to headline the incredible Global Citizen Festival in Central Park this September. Music has always been my way of connecting with people and leaving a mark on the world. I can’t wait to perform, unite, and inspire action," she said.

In an Instagram post shared by the Global Citizen team, the full list of performers was posted and captioned:

"We’re SO back. This year’s #GlobalCitizenFestival hits Central Park on Sept 27 — with @theweeknd, @shakira, @tyla, @ayrastarr, and Mariah the Scientist taking the iconic New York stage.⁠ Oh – did we mention New York’s sweetheart and Global Citizen Ambassador, @thehughjackman, is hosting? This year’s festival campaign will rally to power up communities across Africa, bring education and football to more kids with @fifa, and protect the Amazon – before it’s too late."

While reporting about the upcoming Global Citizen Festival's 2025 lineup, in 2024, the American rapper Doja Cat, whose father is the renowned South African actor Dumisani Dlamini, had Mzansi gushing over her performance at the festival after she delivered a powerful speech while wearing a beaded sparkly dress decorated with the South African flag.

Many people applauded Doja Cat for embracing her South African roots. Fans said they noticed she was doing it more often.
