Who is Tyla?
Meet Tyla Laura Seethal, born on 30 January 2002, and known as Tyla. This South African singer and songwriter blends pop and amapiano in her music. Many have called her the "Queen of Popiano".
Her 2023 single Water made a big impact, reaching the top ten in countries like South Africa, the UK, and the US. Born in Edenvale, Tyla grew up in Johannesburg. In 2021, she signed with Epic Records after her 2019 debut single, Getting Late, took off domestically.
Tyla spills tea on her record label
In a previous report from Briefly News, Tyla recently got real about her record label pressures. The singer, in a magazine interview, spoke about how overwhelmed she felt when Water became a global hit, adding that her label forced her to make bubblegum music, which went against what she truly loved doing.
“[Those songs] didn’t feel like me at all. I remember being in my hotel room, and my managers were calling me, ‘Come down, we need to cut the song.’ I was crying and thinking, ‘This is not what I want. I didn’t get signed to do this.’ They had to [coax] me out of that room. But I think that through doing that, I realised how much more I love African music. It made me more persistent in keeping my ideas.”
