South African actress Tinah Mnumzana did not hold back when she took to the stage at the ME Time Women Empowerment Event at Sun City, North West, on Saturday night in September. Speaking candidly in front of a room full of women, she shone a light on the financial difficulties that entertainers quietly battle behind the glitz that audiences see on screen.
"The government must recognise us as workers, and we must benefit like any other worker in South Africa," Mnumzana said, drawing attention to the lack of formal protections for people in the creative sector.
She acknowledged the disconnect between public perception and private reality, noting that fans rarely see past the highlight reel. "They see us on TV, they see the glamour and all that. But they don't know about the challenges," she said.

Actress and businesswoman Sophie Ndaba also took the floor with a sobering message for younger entertainers who may be dazzled by early success. Fame and large pay cheques, she cautioned, are not permanent.
